Value Stream Mapping, or VSM, is a lean tool commonly used in lean implementation programs. Unlike traditional process mapping tools taught in Six Sigma, VSM maps not only material flows but also information flows that signal and control the material flows. It is used to organize and present the whole process from end to end in a method that is easy to understand by those working the process - it captures the current issues and presents a realistic picture.
Value stream mapping uses a set of graphical icons to help anyone to see and understand the flow of material and information as a product or service makes its way through the value stream. This visual representation facilitates the process of lean implementation by helping to identify the value-adding steps in a value stream and eliminating the non-value adding steps, or wastes (muda).

There are two types of Value Stream Map: Current Stage Map and Future Stage Map.
In the Current State Map, one would normally map a representative product family using appropriate icons in the VSM template. The material and information flows are tracked from start to end. Relevant operational data for key processes, inventory in various queues, are noted. A time-line is displayed at the bottom of the map showing the value added time (processing time) for each operation and the Non Value Added Time (transfer delays) between operations. A comparison of Value Added Time versus the Total Time can be established. A current Stage Map reflects the actual condition.
As with any lean management toolset, the principle aim of Value Stream Mapping is to improve processes. From the current stage VSM, areas with waste (muda) and processes with long delays can be easily identified. By applying concepts and guidelines of Lean Thinking, the current stage can be remodeled to generate a Future Stage Map. Action plans can be drawn up to realize the Future Stage Map within a certain timeline.
